The Thomas splint was developed by the Welsh Orthopaedic Surgeon Hugh Own Thomas (23 August 1834 – 6 January 1891). During his life, Thomas' methods had a low adoption rate. However, after his death, his methods achieved greater acceptance when his splint was introduced in the first world war to treat injured soldiers to stabilise femoral fractures.
His methods were advocated by Sir Robert Jones (his nephew) during the war, who went on to name the Jones fracture and have the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital named after him.
The Thomas Splint was responsible for reducing mortality from fractures from 80% to 20% in 1918.
Mr Thomas was also responsible for the Thomas Test for detecting hip flexion contractures and the Thomas Heel.
Thomas Splints are made from 8mm mild steel with a chromium finish. The padded ring section is covered in leather.
