Footwear lasts are the physical representation of the inside of the foot. Every footwear company has their own lasts, which account for the variation between brands. There have been efforts to standardise the lengths of lasts in the past, which have not gained much traction in the UK outside of militaries.
The Mondopoint system was introduced in the 1970s and updated in 2019 by International Standard ISO 2816:1973 in an attempt to make footwear size more standard. The mondopoint system is widely used by the military, including NATO
The Mondopoint system is based on the average foot length and foot width measured in millimetres. The size of the foot is measured from the most prominent part of the heel to the most prominent toe.
In contrast, the UK system is historically based on the length of a barleycorn and is not formally standardised.
In our Steprite range, we have a number of different lasts for clinicians to select the most appropriate one from. Our Sixth edition catalogue is available for download.
The name of the last in gents and ladies styles and its difference against the standard last is summarised in the following table.
Last | Difference |
Donna/Albert | Narrow heel |
George/Diana | Shallower forepart |
Richard/Denise | Narrow heel and shallower forepart |
In addition to the named last there is also the Contour lasts and the profile last that is only available in ladies' styles.
There are 3 toe shapes available, with the contour toe shape having extra width in the toe box for the accommodation of toes. The Profile toe shape offers a more pointed cosmetic toe shape which is only available in certain ladies' styles.
